Tooth whitening (or bleaching) is a safe, simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.
Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth:
-
The most popular method is our ONE-HOUR, in-office, Rembrandt® Whitening System using a powerful, effective whitening material and a laser light.
-
Another method is an at-home tooth whitening system that utilizes custom fitted trays that are filled with the whitening gel. The trays are worn either twice a day for 30 minutes; or, overnight for a couple of weeks depending on the degree of staining and desired level of whitening.
-
Over the counter products can work to some degree, however, the strength is not as effective as the bleach used in dental offices. (i.e. Crest® Whitening Strips)
Of course, tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up maybe needed every several years, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine. Touch-ups are best accomplished by using an at-home system.
AS A BONUS, we give custom bleach trays to all of our ONE-HOUR bleaching patients - for FREE!
You should know that tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel. Therefore, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. prior to bleaching. If you choose to do so, replacement of any discolored restorations may be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
It is normal to experience some degree of tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching.
Indications for tooth whitening:
What does tooth whitening involve?
The ONE-HOUR system requires only one visit. While your teeth are being whitened by the light, the custom bleach trays are being made in our lab. So, there is no need to return to pick up your custom trays.
At-home tooth whitening usually requires two visits. At the first appointment, impressions will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear plastic, trays.
At your second appointment, you will try on the trays for proper fit, and adjustments will be made if necessary.
You will receive care instructions for your teeth and trays, and be encouraged to visit your dentist regularly to help maintain a beautiful, healthy, white smile.
