These Beautiful Restorations replace the black, corroded, mercury amalgam fillings. Aesthetics is not the only advantage. These materials are bonded to the teeth and as such they strengthen the tooth and require less removal of the tooth structure. Composite restorations truly satisfy our goal of Health, Function and BEAUTY!
There are many types of filling materials available, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Together we can discuss the best options for restoring your teeth. Composites and amalgam fillings are the most widely used today. Because composite fillings are tooth colored, they can closely match the color of existing teeth. Therefore, they are more aesthetically pleasing. Also, composites are vary hard and closely approximate the wearability of enamel. Because amalgam fillings contain 50% mercury, we no longer place amalgams.
As with all dental restorations, composite fillings are not "permanent" and may someday have to be replaced. However, the newer materials are very durable, and will last many years giving you a long lasting, beautiful smile.
Indications for composite fillings:
How are composite fillings placed?
Composite fillings are typically placed in one appointment. While the tooth is numb, we remove all of the decay and/or the defective amalgam as necessary. The tooth will then be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared before the composite is inserted. Next, the new restoration will be precisely placed, light-cured, shaped, and polished, restoring your tooth to its original shape and function. Because composite fillings are so natural in appearance, frequently a brief follow-up visit may be needed to "fine tune" the bite once the anesthetic wears off.
It is fairly common to experience mild sensitivity to hot, cold or biting pressure when new restorations are first placed; however, these symptoms subside shortly after the tooth acclimates to the new filling. Often, such symptoms are indications that the bite may need "fine tuned". Always notify your dentist if the tooth is not comfortable after 48 hours.
Proper oral hygiene practices and sensible eating habits, along with regular dental visits, will aid in the life of your new fillings.
